About Us
Our Mission and History
Mission Statement
Open Minds Theatre Company is an inclusive ensemble producing art that challenges societal norms and encourages empathy with the aim of generating conversation and enacting social change.
Our History
Open Minds Theatre Company was founded in June 2018 by Maddy Auchter and Brandon Engelskirchen in Marietta, Georgia. The impetus to start a theatre company began when Maddy Auchter received Catawba College’s Kickstart Your Art scholarship after pitching to direct one of her favorite plays, God of Carnage, once she moved to Atlanta. The funds associated with this scholarship were used to produce God of Carnage- Open Minds Theatre Company’s inaugural production. Maddy and Brandon hope that Open Minds Theatre Company will be an outlet for those actors, designers, directors, teachers, technicians, and theatre artists who feel as if they are not getting opportunities in the commercial, highly competitive entertainment industry. In this industry, fair representation of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, body type, and disability is not always taken into consideration when casting roles; Open Minds Theatre Company wants to change that. Open Minds will fight against restrictive type-casting, divisive social mores and norms, and ultimately, as a company, will produce art that reflects open-minded ideals and promotes unity within the community. Open Minds is about more than just putting on a performance- the dialogue, conversations, and debate surrounding the subject matter of the performances are encouraged and are an important part of the company’s mission. Scheduled talkbacks, workshops, and mixers will help foster healthy and important discussions between community members who may otherwise not connect. Open Minds Theatre Company wants to hear from you! What kind of theatre and performance would you like to see in the Atlanta area? We are open! Email us at openmindstheatreco@gmail.com.
Past Productions
Our inaugural production, God of Carnage, sold out all three performances at the Black Box inside the Robert Mello Studio in Doraville, Georgia (this production was in no way affiliated with the studio.) The show ran October 12th, 13th, and 14th in the fall of 2019. The actors featured in this production were Toya Nelson as Veronica Novak, Brandon Engelskirchen as Michael Novak, E. Emmanuel Peeples as Alan Raleigh, and Audrey Moore as Annette Raleigh. Madeline Auchter directed the production; Mikaila Mack stage managed, and Donovan King house managed and operated the box office!
